We start by awakening the body to its full potential: promoting healthy lifestyle choices, encouraging movement and strengthening exercises. So how can we do this creatively?

Through active participation in Expressive Arts such as breathing techniques, engaging in the natural rhythms of song and dance, stretching and strengthening through movement exercises, we provide opportunities to awaken our physical bodies to restore vibrancy and wellness.

Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again.

Awaken by breath 

Breath is essential to life. Awakening the body through breath is essential to wellness.

Conscious breathing can create an environment in the body-mind system that increases or decreases energy. It can activate or disengage the stress response. It can activate or startle the relaxation response. We awaken our body with conscious breathing.

Many forms of ancient spiritual practices use conscious breathing as a way to increase mindful awareness. From awareness we can then create optimized behaviours and healthy habits. Just like the reality of our physical forms, breath happens in the now. We cannot breathe in the past, and we cannot yet breathe in the future. 

In The Artful Way, we experience Breath as space. We put into practice what we know to do naturally but have forgotten.

Sound is an integral part of life. We awaken the body through sound practices.

Many of us already have a pretty good understanding of the benefits of healthy eating, and the same can be true of sound. Mindfulness practices like chanting and vocal toning, can help us find a centre and feel grounded, awakening our whole system to wellness.

There are a wide range of techniques that utilize sound as a tool for change. The most common and basic use of sound is for meditation and relaxation. Chanting, toning and overtone singing are some of the most powerful methods for resonating sound throughout the body. The use of nature sounds and natural instruments, such as crystal bowls and tuning forks, have specific healing frequencies and harmonics. Drumming and rhythm are being used to release stress and foster wellness.

Movement is essential to life. We awaken the body through movement and exercise.

Experience movement through seven primary areas of mindfulness in motion: breath, sound, body, story, mind, spirit, and fusion (of all elements). You will tap into your body’s own healing resources and realize that we all have a unique creativity just waiting to be cultivated!

Dancing with mindful awareness is an Expressive Arts experience open to everyone regardless of previous experience with dance, yoga, music, meditation, or spiritual practice. Originally developed as a community class, dancing with mindful awareness continues to evolve beyond the class-only format. Dancing with mindful awareness is a channel for accessing mindful awareness that can be practiced individually or with a group, in the confines of a space like a yoga studio or treatment centre, or in the daily arenas of your life.  Dancing with mindful awareness honours the invitation to “come as you are.”
